Termination of Maintenance There are several forms of maintenance. Maintenance can be for a specific number of months, a specific dollar amount, or it can be permanent, which means it can last for ever, unless certain statutory events occur. The most common statutory events that will terminate maintenance include the death of either party, the remarriage of the party receiving maintenance, or if the party receiving maintenance cohabits with another person on a resident, continuing, conjugal basis. The judgment for dissolution may speak about maintenance or alimony in different terms than what is provided for in the statute. However, if the judgment is silent as to maintenance, then the statutory events are applied.
